Kumasi, Ghana – The commitment to fostering cutting-edge eye care research remains strong, thanks to the continued support and vision of the El-Roi Eye Group. The group proudly announces the ongoing impact of the Imperial Eye Award for the Best Researcher among the graduating class of the Doctor of Optometry (OD) program at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The prestigious award is the brainchild of the founder and CEO of the El-Roi Eye Group, Dr. Jerome Abaka-Cann, OD, FAAO. As a distinguished alumnus of KNUST, Dr. Abaka-Cann was deeply influenced by the foundational research conducted at his alma mater, recognizing its contribution to his own dynamic view of ophthalmic science.
Since its inception in 2020, the Imperial Eye Award has been dedicated to encouraging current OD students to take eye care research seriously. The award seeks to acknowledge that new frontiers must be reached and scaled if eye care is to be significantly improved to better serve the Ghanaian and broader African population.
Each year, the most deserving graduating student receives a Certificate of Achievement and a cash award to recognize their superior research project.
The award’s track record demonstrates its success in propelling recipients toward advanced studies. Past winners have consistently used the recognition as a springboard for postgraduate research careers in eye care and related fields. Notable past recipients include:
Dr. Ebenezer Owusu: Now a PhD candidate at the University of Houston.
Dr. Isaiah Osei Duah Junior: Currently a PhD candidate in Applied Psychology with a specialization in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
Dr. Alan Johnston
Dr. Rosina Osei Boateng
The career paths of these researchers affirm the award's core mission: ensuring that top talent proceeds to contribute substantially to global eye care knowledge.
The Imperial Eye Award is currently administered through the El-Roi Eye Foundation, which now manages all philanthropic activities of the El-Roi Eye Group.
The El-Roi Eye Group expresses its profound appreciation for the enduring partnership with the Department of Optometry at KNUST, a collaboration vital to nurturing the next generation of leading eye care researchers and clinicians.
