He was part of the first two African optometrists to receive this honor in the Special Category for demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurial activity. He is currently a cohort of the Merton C. Flom Leadership Academy (FLOM), the flagship leadership academy of the AAO.
With 14 years of experience, Dr. Abaka-Cann has successfully founded, scaled, and managed a diverse eye care portfolio.
The El-Roi Eye Group (Established 2023)
Dr. Abaka-Cann established the El-Roi Eye Group as the umbrella organization for all his ventures, formalizing his ideology as a social enterprise. The central purpose is to ensure that the revenue generated by the high-end Imperial Eye Centres (17 locations) is sufficient to support the work of the low-cost Indigo Eye Care Centres (5 locations).
The group's subsidiaries include:
Imperial Eye Care Group (Founded 2011): The premier eye care center.
Eye Cann Optical (Founded 2016): Operates as the logistics arm, responsible for sourcing, importing, and distributing ophthalmic equipment and consumables into Ghana.
Indigo Eye Care Centre (Established 2021): The low-cost subsidiary focused on maximizing patient access in underserved peri-urban and rural communities, serving districts with populations ranging from 150,000 to 300,000.
Scale and Mission
The El-Roi Eye Group has successfully built the largest private eye care group in West Africa, operating from 22 distinct locations and providing essential coverage to approximately 70% of Ghana’s major population centers.
His implemented restructuring (2025) has fortified a "people before profit" approach, ensuring money generated is reinvested into staff, training, equipment, and the social enterprise mission.
HealthTech Innovation
Dr. Abaka-Cann taught himself computer programming to solve the internal challenge of efficient patient management, resulting in the development and commercial distribution of the FOVEA EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system. FOVEA EMR was the first EMR for eye care in Ghana, built by an optometrist (development began in 2012), and is now the standard-bearer for EMRs in eye care in the country. It is used internally across all 22 clinics and has been sold to approximately 100 external eye clinics across Ghana.
Professional and Community Service
Awards & Leadership: He is a recipient of the Entrepreneur of the Year in Eye Care (Ghana Optometric Association, Western Zone, 2024) and served as the Acting President of the Western Zone of the Ghana Optometric Association (2021 to 2022).
Mentorship: He serves as an Official Mentor to Fellowship candidates of the American Academy of Optometry and runs extensive internships, training approximately 10 optometry and optician students each year.
El-Roi Eye Foundation (Established March 2024): The foundation manages the group's philanthropic activities, including the Imperial Eye Award for the Best Researcher among graduating OD students at KNUST. The foundation also supports free eye screenings, medication, and spectacle distribution, having screened over 2,000 people in deprived communities.
